International Open Image 2004 Competition Showcase

London, UK - March 12, 2004 -  Kobi Israel’s image, “1700” has raised £3,750 ($6,735/€5,501) for Stonewall’s Campaign For Partnership Rights at last night’s Celebrity Auction at The 6th annual Stonewall Equality Dinner held at the Dorchester Hotel in London, England.

Kobi donated a signed copy, numbered 1 of 45, of the photograph, recently exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery as part of the Schweppes Photographic Portrait Prize 2003 and winner of the judges' award for best image at the Association of Photographers open exhibition 2003.

Celebrities, politicians and leading members of the lesbian and gay community were among the 550 people at the fundraising dinner – now well established as one of the leading events on the gay calendar.  The key note speech of the evening was delivered by Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London, who was one of the first politicians to introduce registration ceremonies for same sex couples.

The same image has also been selected as a finalist for the acclaimed International Open Image 2004 Competition Showcase. This is Kobi’s second consecutive year of being nominated for the award.  The photo will be on exhibit at the Waterloo Gallery in London from March 29th to April 9th, 2004.  The competition is open to all areas of creative media to support the promotion of talent within the fields of digital imaging, virtual reality, web art, photography, installations, painting, sculpture & mixed media.  The theme for this year’s competition is 'MY WORLD'.

Stonewall 2004 Equality Dinner raises over
£130,000 for civil partnership
Last Thursday Stonewall’s highest profile annual fundraising event, its sixth Equality Dinner at the Dorchester Hotel, raised over £130,000. It was the most successful annual Dinner yet for the lesbian and gay charity. All the money raised will go towards Stonewall’s major campaign to ensure that the Civil Partnership Bill has a safe passage through parliament later this year.

The dinner was hosted by Amy Lame, recent star of ITV’s Celebrity Fit Club, and heard keynote speeches from Sir Ian McKellen and London Mayor Ken Livingstone. Ministers, MPs and peers from all political parties attended, along with other well-known faces including Rhona Cameron, Michelle Collins, Dame Beryl Bainbridge, Maggie Hambling, Arabella Weir and Michael Cashman. Leading businesses including JP Morgan, IBM, HSBC and BT were represented.

Ben Summerskill, Stonewall Chief Executive, says: ‘We’re enormously grateful to everyone who supported the Equality Dinner. Stonewall is absolutely dependent on the generosity of its supporters for the success of our campaigns. We know that we’ll face bitter opposition to civil partnership in the House of Lords. Every penny raised can be spent on better briefing our allies.’

This year’s Equality Dinner was made possible by the generous sponsorship of JPMorgan. Mayfair Cellars sponsored a pre-Dinner Champagne reception and the Millivres Prowler Group sponsored the programme.

Ben Summerskill said: ‘The support of these businesses means that we’re able to maximise the amount of money we devote from fundraising to our work. They make a vital contribution.’

Photographs from the dinner are available – please call Andy Forrest, Communications Officer, on 020 7881 9441 or email andy.forrest@stonewall.org.uk for more information.
